Born to Joseph and Kathleen Lakawitch in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, on March 28, 1938, Judy symbolized resilience and love. Her high school years at Calumet High School were marked by her academic enthusiasm, serving as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Chemistry Club, an assistant at the school library, and an active member of the Civics Club. Judy's thirst for knowledge led her to De Paul University, where she completed her secretarial studies.
Upon completing her studies, Judy embarked on her professional journey as a legal secretary in a downtown Chicago law firm. This was merely the beginning of a life rich in experiences and adventures. After a couple of years, she found herself working for Seaboard World Airlines, an experience that ignited her love for travel. Judy thoroughly enjoyed exploring the rich cultures of Madrid, Seville, and Granada, Spain, with her best friend Marge before crossing the Mediterranean Sea to explore Morocco, which holds a special place in Judy's heart as the backdrop of her favorite classic movie, 'Casablanca.'
Judy's life took a turn in 1962 when she met Joseph Crawford in her native Chicago. They married on January 7, 1964, which blessed them with four daughters: Amber, Colette, Dulcie, and Delilah.
Judy shared her love generously, volunteering at a local orphanage in Chicago in high school. As her children joined St. Viators Catholic School in the early 1970s, she further demonstrated her leadership and commitment to service as a member and president of the St. Viators Catholic Guild and a charter member of the Women’s Auxiliary to Boys Clubs of Clark County, Nevada. In later years, she was always an open door for anyone who needed help and a safe place to stay.
Above all, Judy's life was characterized by an unwavering dedication to her family, a love for reading, and a deep empathy for animals. An avid reader, she was frequently heard saying, "Let me finish this last chapter." She was also an exceptional chef known for her gourmet cooking and memorable parties that embodied her spirit of love, laughter, and togetherness. Judy rescued numerous animals throughout her life, including a unique dog she discovered on Fremont Street, who she later learned was half-wolf. Despite losing her sight in her later years, she found solace in audio books, never allowing her circumstances to overshadow her zest for life. Judy was an embodiment of love and brilliance, living a life full of unforgettable memories.
Judy was predeceased by her daughter Amber Crawford, Ex-Husband Joseph Crawford, Sister Rose Williams, and her Parents Kathleen and Joseph Lakawitch.
She leaves a legacy that will continue inspiring her surviving daughters, Colette Meighan, Dulcie Crawford, and Delilah Morganti. Her spirit will live on through her grandchildren, Moriah Contreras, Caleb Contreras, Joshua Lopez Crawford, Ethan Morganti, Rebekah Meighan, and Riley Meighan. Judy is also survived by her brother, Joseph Lakawitch, and her sisters, Kathleen Shauger, Amelia Eakins, and Loretta D’Augustino, all of whom reside in Chicago, Illinois. She also leaves behind her sons-in-law, Robert Morganti and Robert Meighan.
Her life was a testament to strength, love, and unyielding joy, and she will be dearly missed by those fortunate enough to know her.
