Joseph Paul Yonkouski, Sr., age 84, of Las Vegas, passed away April 25, 2017, in his home. Born March 8, 1933, the youngest of three children to Joseph and Mary Yonkouski. Joe was from Peoria, Illinois, where he attended Spalding High School from 1947-51. Joe was recognized as an all-state football, and baseball player, and was drafted by the New York Yankees. He married his high school sweetheart, Venie Shadid in 1953. He served in the Korea War in the United States Army. Joe joined the Peoria Police Dept. in 1963, and became a member of the Police Benevolent Associations. After retiring from the police department in Peoria, he and his family relocated to Las Vegas 30 years ago where he was employed at the Stardust Hotel, eventually retiring in 2005. In addition, he was a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, and a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus. His parents and sister, Dorothy preceded him in death. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, his sister Rosemary, sons, Joe Jr. (Ginna), Scott; daughter, Tracie (Brian); seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. This dearly beloved man will be missed by of his family, friends, and all who knew him. Visitation service will be at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, from 2-5 pm on Sunday, May 7th. Funeral Mass will be held in his honor at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church, 3050 Alta Dr., at 9:30 am, Monday May 8th, followed by burial service at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City 89005 at 12:00 noon.
