John Heeg
October 25, 1951 – October 7, 2018
John Thomas Heeg Jr, age 66, passed away on Sunday, October 7th. John was determined to conquer his medical issues, but the Lord had other plans and John succumb to his illness in the comfort of a local hospital.
John was a graduate of NYIT with a BSEE degree. He also earned an MBA from the same University. John most recently worked for Wynn Resorts as an IT Project Manager. He also did almost 20 years of independent consulting in the IT field and over 20 additional years working in the field for various companies.
Anything having to do with history attracted his attention. If you were playing a Trivia game, he would make an excellent teammate. His knowledge of history, geography, science, math and current affairs was pretty extensive. When his wife wanted to watch a program on a mainstream channel, you could find John watching the History Channel, or National Geographic Channel and would always fight for control of the remote control.
John was an avid cyclist for most of his adult life. He loved watching the Tour de France every summer and wanted someday to ride in it himself. When he was in his twenties he often took long cycling trips to states surrounding his hometown on Long Island, NY. His longest trip was almost 210 miles. When he first starting dating his wife, Mikki, he would cycle 35 miles one way to see her and 35 miles back home in one night.
Also, he had a passion for the NY Fire Department. Although he decided not to be a firefighter, many men in his family were part of the department. That passion motivated him to volunteer for Community Emergency Response Team and Disaster Assistance Recovery Team. John also was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and managed a shelter for 1500 people during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in Louisiana. He came back and told us it was one of the most rewarding experiences of his life next to his marriage and the birth of his children.
Home brewing was a hobby of his. He would experiment with all different recipes. His garage was his brewery. He would brew with the garage door open. We always wondered what the neighbors thought he was doing. He branded his beer “Blind Dog Brewery” and painstakingly designed labels to reflect the name. The name was in honor of his dogs Brookie and Bailey.
John is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mikki and his adult children Dr Lisa Zia,
Andrew Heeg, his son-in-law Dr. Rabbi Zia, his granddaughter Eliana Sofia Zia and his three dogs Brooklyn, Max and puppy Sadie.
