John "Jack" Campbell, 93, loving and devoted husband and father and long-time resident of Las Vegas/Henderson, Nevada, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday April 25, 2023. He was born December 22, 1929 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to John Angus and Mary Katherine Campbell.
Jack, as he was known, was a graduate of Catholic Central High School and received his Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration from Michigan State University. He married Mary Louise Payette in Grand Rapids, MI on January 10, 1953 and had eight children. He served in the army during the Korean War from 1952 until 1954. Upon his discharge he returned to Grand Rapids to begin his career as a Certified Public Account with the accounting firm of Ernst and Ernst. He transferred to Albuquerque, New Mexico; and then San Francisco, California until 1972 when he left the firm and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked as the Vice President of Finance for MGM Grand Hotels, Inc. until he-retired in 1986. Following his retirement he served on the Boards of Sahara Hotels and Mikohn Gaming Corporation. In 1989 he partnered with his son Rob to open Sportco Sporting Goods. The Henderson store supported youth sports and employed many of his children and grandchildren until it was sold in 2021.
He was a devout Catholic and volunteered much of his time to the church. He developed a youth sports program at St. Patrick’s Elementary School where his children attended in Larkspur, CA during the mid 1960’s. He served on the finance committee at St. Viator Catholic Community in Las Vegas and St. Thomas More in Henderson, Nevada.
Jack is survived by seven of his eight children: Nancy (Tom) Brooks, John, Mary Kay (Michael) Cook, Jane (John) Camburn, Pete (Ann Hipskind), David (Danee) and Jim; his daughter-in-law Brenda; his brother Robert (Rita Lou), sister-in-law Marge; fourteen grandchildren Sarah, Tommy, Matthew, Michael, James, Mary Frances, Geoffrey, Christopher, Patrick, Michael, Katie, Peter, Christopher and Lew; and four great-grandchildren Mackenzie, William, Wesley and Collins. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou, his son Rob, his siblings Mary (Hunter), Dorothy (Chulski), Helen, Thomas, and James and great-grandson, Gavin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Community, 130 N. Pecos Rd., Henderson, 89074 with burial services at 1:00 p.m. at Palm Eastern Mortuary and Cemetery, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, 89123.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Administrative Offices, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd N., Las Vegas, NV 89101.
