Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Howard Porter Hartman and Ruth Zeigler Hartman.
As a boy, Jim started his longtime hobbies of magic and golf and his love (depending upon the season) of the Phillies and Eagles.
Jim attended Germantown Academy (Class of ’65) and Westminster College (Class of ’69). His grandfather, the late Dr. Earl F. Zeigler, was a great influence and Jim originally planned to follow in his footsteps and become a Presbyterian minister.
But plans changed and Jim started on his retail career path. In 1971, he went to work at Strawbridge & Clothier, and soon after became part of the new Clover Division. He was the Housewares Buyer, a position he loved, and was there for over 25 years, continuing to assist with the Division’s closure.
After that, Jim and Marilyn made moves to Cartersville, GA and North Las Vegas, NV, and Jim had other retail management positions including a 10-year run at Carmax.
In retirement, Jim had time to play golf and craps, and pursue his hobby of magic. He recently was the proud recipient of The International Brotherhood of Magicians’ Order of Merlin Excalibur Award for 50 years of continuous membership and support.
In addition to Marilyn, Jim is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Hartman Green and her husband Christopher Green of Souderton, PA with four children: Jack, Emma, Joshua and Aubrey, and his son, Christopher James Hartman and his wife Laura DiOrio Hartman of West Orange, NJ with two children: Fiona and Llewyn.
A Celebration of Life Event(s) still to be determined. Private cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Palm Mortuary Northwest, 6701 N. Jones Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89131.
In lieu of flowers, please hug your family, brighten someone’s day, or do a random act of kindness with Jim in mind.
