Hazel Roach was born in Hope, Arkansas on January 16, 1922 to Jeffery and Genett McGill. She is preceded in death by her parents as well as five brothers, four sisters and her youngest son, Billy Earl.
Big Mama as she was called by both family and friends accepted Christ at an early age. She received her education in Blevins, Arkansas; there she had two boys, Willie and Earl. She then moved to Seattle, Washington and she had her daughter Gloria.
Big Mama moved to Richmond, California in 1952 where she married the love of her life, Ivory Roach. Together they later moved to Los Angeles, California where they met many wonderful friends. She was a long time member of the Eastern Star, and very proud of her contributions to the organization.
Big Mama owned her own salon shop “Hazel’s Beauty Salon” in the early 60’s to the late 70’s where she worked until she closed in the late 70’s. She served as a school crossing guard for the city of Inglewood in the late 70’s and 80’s.
When Ivory retired from the City of Los Angeles, they relocated to Las Vegas to their new home, built just for them, near ‘The Lakes’ in 1990. There they have had 22 wonderful years in the city, enjoying their new found lifestyle.
One of Big Mama’s greatest joys was bowling, so much so that she joined a bowling league and participated in it for over 20 years, both in California and Nevada. She also enjoyed going to the gym and she loved to play keno machines and would win much of the time.
