Born November 28, 1942 in Evanston, Illinois. Hal passed away of heart failure on January 19, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he had resided for the past 10 years. He is preceded in death by Doris, his wife of over 30 years. He is survived by his younger brother Bill Norton, his niece Felicia Soth, her husband Bunyiam, their two children Leone and Alexis, his other niece Therese Norton, and by several cousins. Growing up on Long Island, New York, Hal was active in scouting. He attended the U.S. Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and went to the World Jamboree in the Philippines in 1960. He graduated from Manhasset High School, attended Union College for one year and received his bachelor’s degree from Adelphi College. He played the tuba in high school, both concert orchestra and marching band. For seven years, he went with his mom, dad and brother to the week-long Deering Family Camp with the Congregational Church of Manhasset. He and his Dad coveted their First Day Cover stamp collection. Hal started his professional life at Equitable Life Insurance Company in New York City, where he met and married Doris. After moving to New Jersey, Hal was self-employed and did contract computer programming, including two contracts in Nigeria. In 2006, Hal and Doris retired to their favorite vacation spot, Las Vegas. He and Doris loved going on cruises all over the world. Following Doris’ passing, Hal took his brother Bill on a cruise to Hawaii. Hal enjoyed reading, playing solitaire, and had a great collection of laser discs. He was a computer whiz, a trivia buff, a cat lover and a collector. Living in Las Vegas, he and Doris enjoyed weekly bingo with their best friends at a local casino. In more recent years, he enjoyed regular visits from his brother and nieces and his morning coffee with his neighbor, Dave Torres. No formal services are planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to a cat charity of your choice or the Poppy Foundation, which was one of Hal's favorites.
