Retired Commander Gregory H. Johnson passed away on Monday, June 12, 2023, after a nine-month battle against cancer.
Greg’s law enforcement career began in 1975 as a Law Enforcement Intern at Industry Station. On August 4, 1978, Greg attended LASD Academy Class #190. Upon graduating as a deputy sheriff, his assignments included Men's Central Jail, Inmate Reception Center, Transportation Bureau, and Industry Station. He was promoted to sergeant in 1986 and was assigned to Lynwood Station, Vice Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, and Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau. He promoted to Lieutenant in 1997 and was assigned to Men's Central Jail, Malibu/Lost Hills Station, and Internal Affairs Bureau.
Johnson was promoted to Captain in 2005 and assumed command of the North County Correctional Facility. Greg finished his career overseeing several custody facilities as a commander in Custody Division, retiring on March 31, 2012.
Commander Johnson earned an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice from Mount San Antonio College, attended Cal State Los Angeles, and majored in Public Administration. Greg enjoyed jogging and motorcycle riding in his spare time, and was an avid University of Southern California football fan.
Greg is survived by his wife, Christie, and his children Randy, Loni and Brittany. Greg has 6 grand children and 2 great grand children.
