Gregory Francis “Greg” Buhyoff Gregory Francis “Greg” Buhyoff, a native of Newfane, NY, passed away from sudden illness on December 27, 2020 in Las Vegas, NV where he resided with his family. Greg was born on January 9, 1956 in Newfane, New York to John Buhyoff, Jr and Joan Harding Buhyoff. He was a 1974 graduate of Newfane Central School, Newfane NY, a diligent and gifted student, a multi-instrumental musician, and fine athlete. He was an honor student and achieved all-league honors in baseball and basketball.
In 1985, Gregory attained his undergraduate degree in Asian Studies and Linguistics with high honors from University of Hawaii, Manoa, cooperatively with classes at Columbia University, as well as 1 year in a foreign exchange program at the Mandarin Center in Taiwan. In Taiwan, Greg immersed in the culture, and became fluent in Mandarin Chinese while tutoring in English. Greg had an abiding interest in discovering the world and other cultures. While finishing his undergraduate studies, Greg was employed as a flight attendant for Pan Am airlines flying Asian routes furthering his abilities in Asian languages and cultures. His ability to continue his employment with Pan Am while accomplishing rigorous academics was especially noteworthy.
Greg eventually enrolled at the McGeorge School of Law, University of the Pacific, where he received a Juris Doctor degree with Distinction in 1988, passing the California Bar Exam in February 1989. Other academic distinctions included the Dean’s Honor Roll from 1986-1988; the Vern Adrian and Annabel McGeorge Academic Achievement Scholarship, the John A McCarthy Memorial Scholarship, and membership in the Traynor Honor Society.
Greg married Agnes Buhyoff (née Tepait) in October 1992. They remained a loving and faithful couple throughout Greg’s life. Together they raised their daughter, Stephanie Buhyoff, who achieved a merit scholarship at the Adelson Educational Campus in Las Vegas and graduated Gonzaga University in 2018.
Greg’s legal career spanned many decades and numerous professional associations, including Kojima Law Offices (Tokyo); Baker & McKenzie (Hong Kong and Saigon); Weide & Miller (Las Vegas); Hogan Lovells (Vietnam); Harris & Moure (Seattle); Bayramoglu Law Office (Henderson); and AJ Kung Inc Law Office (Las Vegas). Throughout this time, Greg also operated his own law practice, Law Office of Gregory F. Buhyoff (Las Vegas), collaborating frequently with his longtime friends and professional colleagues, Philip Kantor and Connie Masters of Law Offices of Philip A Kantor in Las Vegas. Greg specialized in intellectual property and trademark law. A frequent participant at the annual meetings of the International Trademark Association around the world, Greg was distinguished for his knowledge of and experience with the intellectual property systems of other countries, particularly East and Southeast Asia. Notably, Greg was fluent at reading and writing Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese.
Starting as a young man, Greg enjoyed history and the exploring the outdoors—a pastime that he loved doing with his family. He enjoyed long drives viewing wildlife, fishing, and the appreciating scenery that the great American west offered. Greg’s best times in nature near his birthplace in Niagara County, NY were hikes to Keg Creek, antique rifle shooting, and war reenactments with his dear daughter Stephanie and beloved cousin, local artist and historian Geoffrey Harding. He also enjoyed the simple pleasures of tending his garden. Additionally, Greg was a lifelong Buffalo Bills fan and an enthusiastic Gonzaga Basketball devotee, as it was his daughter’s alma mater.
Greg was predeceased by his parents, the late John Buhyoff Jr and Joan Harding Buhyoff. Greg is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Agnes; his daughter, Stephanie; brother Eric Jon Buhyoff, brother Todd James Buhyoff (and wife Andrea); brother Joel Russell Buhyoff (and wife Noela); sister-in-law Alice Martelli; brother-in-law Romeo Tepait (and wife Armejin); sister-in-law Irma Campos (and husband Samson); sister-in-law Theresa D’Assalenaux; sister-in-law Olivia Rettke (and husband Gordon); and brother-in-law Thelou Tepait (and wife Lucia); as well as many nieces, nephews and friends spanning the globe.
