Gloria Jean Hammond Freeman was born in Sumter, South Carolina on May 12, 1943. She was the sixth of eight children born to the late Lucious and Daisy Walters Hammond. She was raised in Sumter and graduated from Lincoln high school in 1960. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Benedict College, Columbia, South Carolina in 1964. She did further studies at South Carolina State College, Orangeburg, South Carolina, Sam Houston College in Texas, and the University of Missouri in Kansas City. She was joined in holy matrimony to Tyrone C. Freeman on June 27, 1964. To this union one child was born, Tonya C. Freeman. She was baptized at Jehovah Missionary Baptist church in Sumter. She was a faithful and active member of Jehovah under the guidance and tutelage of the late Rev. Benjamin F. Weston. She played the piano for Sunday school and sung on the Sunbeam, Junior and Young Adult Choirs until she left Sumter to travel with her military husband. She attended the Chapel Service on the many military bases where they were stationed until she joined Unity Baptist Church. She served faithfully at Unity on the Senior Ushers, Deaconess, and Trustee Boards. She was active in the Women’s Ministry serving as Captain of Anna’s Circle. She taught in the public schools in South Carolina and Texas before starting work for the U.S. Government. She worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Air Force and the Social Security Administration where she retired after 30 years of service on September 30, 2002. She leaves to mourn her death a loving, caring and devoted husband, Tyrone C. Freeman; daughter Tonya; son-in-law Kevin Thorn; grandsons, Jamaal Hammond and Dylan Thorn; granddaughters Tara and Kayla Thorn; loving sisters Gladys Snipes of Cheltenham, PA; Ella H. Sims of Savannah, GA; Dorine (Earl) Miller of Oxon Hill, MD. She also leaves eleven nieces and seven nephews and a host of relatives and many friends. One friend who has been faithful to the end- Thelma L. Bradley of Sumter. Preceding her in death are her parents; brothers Lucious Hammond, Jr. and Chester Hammond; two loving sisters Janie H. Singleton and Bernice Solomon; brothers-in-law Richard Singleton, Jr. Shepard Solomon and Sidney C. Snipes; and sisters –in –law Clara Stokes Hammond and Dorothy Hammond.
