Gloria Allean Brown, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Sunrise Memorial Hospital. To quote her sister, Carrie, “Allean was tremendously loyal and loved her family and friends but she would also tell you the truth when you needed it.” Gloria was born March 30, 1940 to parents, Seymore Brown Sr. and Maudine Otis Brown in Franklinton, Louisiana. She lived seventy five triumphant and valiant years!! Being a forty year cervical cancer survivor, she never gave into the temptation to just stop and give in to the pain and tiredness. She surely was an incredibly independent African-American woman. One of her favorite memories was of going to the “County Fair” in Franklinton. She would always enjoy even the thought of being at the fair. She would say, “You haven’t lived until you went to the fair!”
Gloria graduated from Washington Parish High School and moved on to become a PROUD graduate of Grambling State University (Class of 63’). At Grambling, she attained her degree in Physical Education. After graduation, she accepted a job in the Clark County School System of Las Vegas. She taught various subjects including Arts & Crafts along with Physical Education. Gloria furthered her education by receiving her masters from NOVA University. After thirty-five years, she retired from the school system. Not one to sit idly by, she became a very active political enthusiast (Democrat) and a member of “Alpha Kappa Alpha” sorority. Gloria was in attendance at President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural and she was also invited to President Barack Obama’s Inaugural. She loved her community and fought to find ways that would make sure that the communities of North and West Las Vegas had a voice.
Of course being in Las Vegas, she also enjoyed all of what Vegas had to offer, fine dining, concerts, & movies. Among her favorite activities included tending to her flowers and taking family & friends to the "Hush Puppy." Being seventy-five did not stop her from being aware of the current music scene. She especially enjoyed “Nicki Minaj” and old school rapper “Ice-T.”
She is survived by her sister, Carrie L. Brown Thomas of North Las Vegas, nephews: Michael A. Thomas of Silver Spring, MD, Brian K. Thomas of North Las Vegas, Jerome Brown of Detroit, MI, niece: Janette of Detroit, MI.
Gloria will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. We take comfort in knowing that she is now with so many family and friends who are always watching over us. Viewing will be held on Thursday Sept. 4th, 2015 from 3-7 pm at Palms Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St, Las Vegas, NV. 89101. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a cancer charity of your choice in Gloria’s name.
