Gladys Margarita Tertrou Miranda, 84, of Las Vegas, died March 16, 2014 at her daughter MaryAnne’s home surrounded by her family. She was born to the late Francois and Generosa (Ortiz) Tertrou, July 21, 1929, in Havana, Cuba. Gladys graduated in 1948 in Havana, Cuba with a degree in education. Gladys really enjoyed her time with her students as a physical education teacher. She married her soul mate Antonio Miranda in 1960, and both relocated from Havana to Las Vegas in 1961. Her husband Antonio precedes Gladys in death in 1984. Gladys always had fond memories of her parents, she was fortunate enough to be able to have her mother, father, and grandmother come and live with her and Antonio in Las Vegas. Gladys was also able to bring her baby brother Jose “Pepe” to live with her in Las Vegas. Gladys always enjoyed watching her Spanish programs, and could watch the food network for hours on end. You knew that if there were some major news story, Gladys would be watching it and would call you with an update. You never had to remember when to change your clocks for daylight saving-time; Gladys would always call you to remind you.
Gladys was a loving sister, mother, grandmother, and aunt who enjoyed socializing and being surround by her family and friends. Gladys was so proud of her heritage, she was always talking about “my country: Cuba”. Gladys always wanted to be the last person to leave a party. When MaryAnne and Magdalena grew up, everything always took place at the Miranda house, parties, dinners, sleep overs etc. All the children of the various family and friends had the utmost respect for Gladys, when she spoke they listened. Gladys was known as Mrs. Miranda, Gladys, Gladie, Mami, Mama, and Abu.
Gladys is preceded in death by her brother George, and sister Aimee. She is survived by her brother Jose “Pepe” and his daughter Desiree. Gladys is survived by two children: MaryAnne (Paul), and Magdalena (Neil). She is survived by her five grandchildren: Jacqulin (Jackie), Alexis, Jerry (Amanda), Danielle, Shane, four great-grandchildren, Landon, Hailey, Chole, and Zander and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Catholic service will be held 6 p.m. at Palm Eastern Mortuary and Cemetery on Friday March 28, 2014 and she will be laid to rest on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the same location.
