Evelyn Y. McColl, 89 years of age, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2023 at Aegis Assisted Living/Memory Care facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Evelyn was born in Black Hawk, Colorado on August 7, 1934 to the late Leah and Edward Blake. She was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband of forty-four years, Jeff McColl Jr. Evelyn is survived by her stepson, Jeff McColl III, who resides in Elko, Nevada. Evelyn was a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada since 1950.
Evelyn graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and in later years pursued and received her master’s degree in nursing. Eveyln used her nursing education and skills while working in Las Vegas for the Clark County Public Health Department. While Evelyn started her career as a public health nurse visiting and caring for countless families, men, women and children, she eventually became an administrator. Evelyn was an innovator and helped bring new health services to the public health arena in Las Vegas. She recruited and trained countless other nurses and certified nursing assistants. Evelyn was a dedicated nurse until the end, always concerned about the welfare of others. Not only did Evelyn have a distinguished career as a nurse in Clark County but Evelyn also was a nurse in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Captain. Following active duty, Evelyn signed up and served in the Nurse Corp Reserves. Following Evelyn’s retirement from work in 1990 as the Deputy Health Officer for Clinics and Nursing Services, at the Clark County Public Health Department, Evelyn continued to “serve” by volunteering at the Veteran’s Hospital. Evelyn was extremely proud of being able to serve her country in the Navy and she was equally proud of being a nurse.
Evelyn will be remembered by her numerous friends as a kind and generous woman. She was generous volunteer at her parish, St. John Neuman Catholic Church and served her fellow parishioners in several different ministries. She will be fondly remembered and missed by her new friends, fellow residents, and staff, at Aegis Assisted Living facility, where she consistently offered a friendly smile, a helping hand, or words of encouragement. Evelyn will forever be missed by her friends old and new and will never be forgotten.
Evelyn’s friends are invited to attend services for Evelyn, on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2575 W. El Campo Grande Avenue, North Las Vegas, Nevada, 89031. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am. Internment and military honors will follow immediately after at Palm Northwest Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. Las Vegas, Nevada, 89131.
