Don was born in Afton, OK to Raymond Young and Martha (Waldrup) Young on January 1, 1950. They lived in several states, ending up in Fairbanks, AK where he graduated from Lathrop High School and started his family. He became a journeyman carpenter and worked for his father’s construction company. He followed Ray and Martha to Las Vegas to work on the re-building of the MGM hotel. After that job was completed, he worked for the Nevada Test Site where he was exposed to Beryllium which caused major lifelong health problems. He was an active member of the Carpenters Local #1977. He is still remembered for his expertise in hanging doors, which he did on hotel jobs. Don married Doreen (Hobbie) Young on September 24, 2005. She was the perfect companion for him as well as a wonderful support in helping him raise his youngest son. Don was a kind and generous friend and family man, with a great sense of humor, who enjoyed boating with his kids on Lake Mead. He enjoyed hunting, repairing cars, his 1968 Roadrunner and watching NASCAR as well as spending as much time as he could with his family. Upon his retirement he bought a Harley Davidson motorcycle with plans to ride it across the country. He was unable to do this as his health deteriorated. He was an avid fan of Yellowstone and spent his final years watching the series repeatedly while sipping on his Captain Morgan.
Don is preceded in death by his wife, Doreen Young, his father, Raymond Young, his mother, Martha Young, his brother, John Young and his sister, Betty Ann (Young) Petersen.
Don is survived by his daughters, Tara Young and Jennifer (Young) Phipps and his sons, Wesley Young and Devin Young, 6 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, a niece and all their blended families.
The family of Donald Young wishes to extend our sincere thanks to his home healthcare nurses, Patty, Hope, Rosamond, Virginia and Stella who all went above and beyond in his care.
Services will be Saturday the 4th of May, viewing from 2-5 pm, followed by a memorial service at 5 pm, reception to immediately follow at 6pm at Palm NW, 6701 N. Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131. Arrangements were handled by Palm NW Mortuary and Cemetery.
