It would be wrong to say Devin passed. He did not pass. He was taken. Before his time, before our time, from us. Forever. He had a lifetime more to laugh and share. That’s what we thought and took it for granted that every time we left each other, we would see each other again soon. Devin was the greatest. It’s easy to say, easy to parse, and easily ignored. Trust us. Devin was the greatest. He had an eye for the most-maligned, the most down-trodden, the most horrible and he raised us. He offered his hand and pulled us from the muck. He dropped us on safe ground and when you stared at him in disbelief he’d shrug. A twitch. A smile. “You gotta’ do what you gotta’ do.” And Devin did. He was a vortex, a swirling black hole of friendship from which nothing escaped. Not even you. Knowing him was a virtue, a slap on the shoulder of the nearest person and a point of pride. We’d say, “That’s my friend.” And you’d laugh. We’d all laugh. He made us all laugh. Now, we only have the memory of his laugh; we are reduced for his absence. Devin Joe Andreas is survived by his mother Cindy, his father Jerry and Step Mother Marsha, three sisters Tia, Trina, and Alainia, 13 nieces and nephews, 4 great nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles, and cousins, and the wealth of friends he accrued because having friends and family were the most important thing in him. That is the measure of Devin’s life, but it is not the tale. We are the tale. Every memory and grin, every time you hear the music he heard, every time you play the games he played, every single time will be as if he’s still there. Every shared moment from the oddest motley of friends and family ever assembled. And we all have one thing in common: we knew greatness once. Devin’s greatest enjoyments were time spent with the people he loved. He had a nickname, picked up from years of board and video games. He was our King Lazor. Our very own Devin.
