Daisy Campbell was born on September 17, 1931, in Mart, Texas to Sammie Campbell and Julia Jackson Campbell. In 1945 she moved to Las Vegas, NV at the age of 14 with her parents and siblings Henry Campbell and Virgie Campbell Williams (who preceded her in death). They lived on 1st Street where the California Hotel sits today. The family joined Zion Methodist Church which was the only black church in Las Vegas at the time.
Daisy graduated from the historic Las Vegas High School in 1949. Daisy worked at Bertae Specialties on Jackson Street as a salesclerk. She then worked as a cashier at Humdinger. In the early 1980’s Daisy worked at Operation Life and was instrumental in helping to start the first WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) Program providing nutritional education. She also worked for the Gleaner’s Organization collecting food from local grocery stores throughout the city to provide food for the underprivileged.
In 1985, Daisy began working at the Variety Day Home and Early Learning Center where she was certified as a Child Development Association (CDS) teacher. She was so passionate about her job and was so loved by all the children and their parents, she often took children home with her to spend the weekend. Daisy also conducted training for clients to receive their BADA (Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Abuse) certification. She dedicated her life to the nourishment, education, and safety of children in the Las Vegas area. Daisy retired in 2008.
Daisy’s limitless heart and love for not only her family but her community was profound and will continue to touch the lives of those who knew her, past and present. She was a well-known and an active member of the Democratic Party and never missed an election or caucus. She was also a fashion icon and lived for glam, class, and big hats!!!
Daisy leaves to celebrate her life and legacy, five children, Kathy Fox, Loura “Elaine” Fox, Kenneth “Bum” Fox (who preceded her in death), Lorenzo Walker, and Tina Walker all of Las Vegas, NV. One sister Dorothy Dale Moore of California. Grandchildren Stacy Harris, Monica Fox, James A. Gay V., Kinney Pool (who preceded her in death), Kimbie Clark, Anetra Price, Kali Fox Miller, Keanna Hokanson, Joreal Walker, Jheryl Walker, Ajahnique Walker, and Angel Walker all of Las Vegas, NV. A special niece Paulette Campbell, nephews Randy Howerton, Vernon Howerton (who preceded her in death), and Nino Williams.A special cousin Thelma Williams. God Children Royal Byron, Dyarell Hunt and Michael Thomas. A host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, god children, church family, friends…and ALL OF HART STREET.
