On behalf of Nikki Robinson-Thomas, I wanted you all to know that Alice Robinson, formerly of JC, passed away around 7:15pm Las Vegas time, November 30th. Many of you undoubtedly will remember Alice. Not only was she an honorary member of SMBC, but also a longtime member of Ward Chapel AME. Perhaps you will most remember her soaring soprano voice of the JC Community Singers. She was uniquely gifted, memorably lending her talented vocals to songs like Change, Goin’ Up Yonder and Someday.
She was as talented in the kitchen as she was behind a mic stand. If she knew you were coming, she made sure she had a favorite of yours baking in the oven or cooking on the stove top. And when she opened the door to her home, she also made sure she had a warm hug and a big smile to greet you. She was a loyal friend to many in the community, to those unknown and to those known. Perhaps most notably among the “knowns” was Ms. Minnie P. Boyd and her family.
Whenever you were on the phone with her or leaving her home and you said “goodbye,” she never returned that sentiment. Instead it was an enthusiastic, “okay then!” I always found that to be her way of saying, “Hope to see you again!”
I think that was her faith talking. Her way of demonstrating hope. It reminds me of a few lines in the song she sung, Someday. Someday, I’m going to be called up to meet Him. I want to be ready when He comes. For I must seek my Savior for myself. For no one else can give an account for me when He comes.
Rest well, Alice. Someday, indeed.
Please pray for Nikki and her family as they begin preparations for a Celebration of Life service for Alice.
