Addie Jaunita “Nita” McDonald passed away peacefully at home on Thursday January 19, 2023 at the age of 91.
Nita was the eldest of eight children born to L. Bert and Hilda Story on October 12, 1931 in Talihina, OK. She lived in Talihina until the age of eight, when the family migrated to California during the Dust Bowl era, putting down roots in Earlimart, CA where she began working at an early age alongside her father in the cotton and potato fields. It was in Earlimart that she met her husband, Vertis Lee McDonald Sr. She and Vertis were married in St. George, UT on June 25, 1949 and were married for 59 years before his passing in 2008. After residing for several years in Kern County, they moved their family to Northern California, but eventually relocated to Santa Paula, CA in 1961, making it their lifetime home where she resided until May of 2016, when she moved to Henderson, NV.
Nita was a homemaker for the majority of her life and took great pride in raising their four children, always maintaining an immaculate home and yard for her family. In the early 70’s she ventured out to work after all of her children were either raised or in high school. She started working in banking, but decided that retail sounded more appealing, so she began working at Sally Shop in Santa Paula and soon took over managing it for the next several years. She had also worked for Bank Stationary in Ventura and Youngland and Irene’s Dress Shop in Santa Paula before retiring in the early 90’s.
Nita was preceded in death by her husband Vertis L. McDonald Sr., son Vertis L. McDonald Jr., parents L. Bert and Hilda Story Hubbard, four brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by her daughters Gail Norton of Henderson, NV, Sharon Ped-Wilson of Santa Paula, CA, Diana Brewer of Russellville, AR, step-daughter Brenda Lowe of Bakersfield, CA, 11 grandchildren; Tommy Jr., Tim, Dawnelle, Stacey, Vertis III, Candice, Jennifer, Tony, Nick, Dustin and Mark, 30 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
A special thank you to Melissa and Sarena with Compassion Care Hospice of Henderson, NV for the excellent care they gave to our mother over the last few months.
Graveside Services will be held at Santa Paula Cemetery on Monday February 13, 2023 at 11:00am.
