Although he was only a 6th grade graduate of Belleair Elementary School, he was destined to be an amazing self made man.
As a young teen sick with double Pneumonia, he listened to the heavy equipment working to build Missouri Avenue. As soon as he was able to, he investigated that noise and found his life’s passion. As he called it, he wanted to operate that “Yellow Gold” (Caterpillar Heavy Equipment).
As young as he was, he found a way to follow his dream and eventually opened Overstreet Paving in 1969. He was also married and had two children Monica Jean and Thomas Edward Jr.
Tom worked hard and built his self employed company to an excess of 300 employees. He built roads covering 3 counties as well as the State, and countless private work. When you have over 300 employees you allow people to own a home, buy a car and pay for school. It is impossible to know how many lives Tom affected in a positive way over the years.
He wasn’t all work however, his other life passions were hunting, fishing and traveling . He started small with rabbits and squirrels but WOW did he expand his trophy collection.
Thirty years ago Tom met and married his current wife Barbara who shared his passion for travel. There were many family and friend hunts all over the US; Colorado, Alaska, Missouri, British Columbia, NW Territories and he loved to duck hunt in Mexico.
Tom and Barbara then expanded their travel to foreign continents starting with Australia and New Zealand. The following year, two months were spent exploring South Africa and Zimbabwe. This by far was their favorite trip. They never stopped talking about those adventures. Spain and Portugal was another adventure not to be forgotten.
The motor home was another form of adventure Tom loved. The NASCAR circuit, traveling the US, Canada and Alaska including the “Top of the World Highway" was unforgettable.
Eventually cruises became the choice of travel. This included a bucket list item of a Trans-Atlantic Mediterranean cruise. More importantly, Tom loved cruising with our grandkids and instilling in them the love of travel and exploration. He always said “this kind of education can not be taught in school”.
Tom Overstreet was an amazing man who loved life and lived life to the fullest. He was a kind, generous loving man who loved his Country and would do anything for his family and friends. He will be remembered as a man who kept his word, paid his bills and who people loved to be with.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children, Monica Jean (Von Kramer), Thomas Edward Jr. (Stacey Overstreet); Step Children, Teresa Ann (Pat Godcharles) and Laura Cathrine (Scott Frechette); and Grandchildren, Brittni, Alecia, Thomas, Rhett, Wade, Evelyn, Ava and Drew.
Services for Thomas will be held at Serenity Funeral Home, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33774 on September 24th, 2022 beginning with a Visitation starting at 12 pm noon. A Celebration of Life will begin at 1pm with a reception to follow. The family then invites all attendees to stay for a catered reception to continue to share memories and toast to a wonderful man. The family suggests attire to be country club casual.
The family asks that donations be made in Thomas' memory to Suncoast Hospice Care Center and to the Alzheimer's Association.
