Marjorie Jane McManus, 98, loving, caring, generous, seer of good in everyone, peacefully relocated to heaven on March 25, 2023 from Clearwater, Florida. She was born in Mount Pleasant, PA to Harry L. and Gertrude Schindel Hartigan. Marjorie was the second born of the Hartigan children . A sister, Helen, age 100 of Atlanta , survives her. Brothers Joseph and William and sister Betty Gert preceded her in death. Marjorie graduated from Ramsey High School in her beloved Mount Pleasant . She was a basketball team captain, drum majorette, and president of the social club when she wasn't working in the local five and dime. Margie was a small town girl at heart. Growing up in Mt. Pleasant everyone knew everybody and that’s just the way she liked it. Soda fountains, Main Street parades and a 10 cent movie house was her idea of Urban Living. However, shortly after finishing high school for medical reasons, she packed up her Mount Pleasant memories and moved to Miami, Florida .
No matter where she resided in her life , she always brought the love of her hometown with her . While in Miami , Margie met and married Otto Licht and gave birth to their first child Cynthia . She worked there in the Pan American Airlines office and modeled snakeskin fashion for Bill Haast of the famed Miami Serpentarium. Her husband's career took the family to Tiffin, Ohio and then to Collingswood, New Jersey where her two sons Mark and then Matthew were born . Soon after Matthew's birth the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida for six years , and then to Clearwater, FL her final worldly residence.
For no fault of her own, Marjorie and Otto parted ways. Eventually, she met and married a local dentist, Dr Phillip McManus, and became a valued office manager and dental assistant in his office. Phillip's daughter Diane was warmly received into the family. Marjorie enjoyed golfing, playing Bridge and bowling. These were her hobbies, but her passion was poetry. She had a remarkable talent for writing prose and reciting lengthy poems by heart. She told us that before falling to sleep at night, that she would reel off verse after verse. She was so prolific with her talent, her grandson would often wonder if she could be a savant. The one thing that eclipsed her love of poetry was her obsession with her children and their progeny. She touched each and every one of their lives in a positive and permanent way. Margie / Mom/ Grammargie /GG will be terribly missed but NEVER forgotten by children, Cindy (Joe), Mark (Brenda), Matt, Diane; grandchildren, Tristan ( Martin), Adam, Corey (Brenda), Chelsea (Kevin), Tommy (Jessica), Leah( Will), Matthew (Katie); and great grandchildren, Rowen, Archer, Maverick, Jax, Harley, Luz , Logan, and Jack.
A funeral Mass will be held, Monday, April 3, 2023 at 11am, St. Jerome Catholic Church, 10895 Hamlin Blvd., Largo, FL 33774. She will be laid to rest following the mass at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL 33774. A reception will follow back at Serenity Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to Lighthouse of Pinellas, in honor of Marjorie.
