Joan Ellen Miller

Joan Ellen (Sullivan) Miller, 87, of Largo, Florida died peacefully on Saturday, November 19, 2022 at home under Hospice care. Joan was born on November 26, 1934 in Chicago to John and Virginia (Walsh) Sullivan. She married John Miller on June 23, 1951. She moved with her husband to the southwest suburbs of Chicago, and they raised their children in Tri State Village near Hinsdale. Joan was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to eight children, twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She stayed home with her children for many years, and then worked in the kitchen at Hinsdale Hospital. Joan, her husband, and children enjoying traveling around the United States going on camping trips, staying on the beach in Florida, and visiting national parks. Joan was close to her siblings and made many friends, no matter where she lived. She had an infectious smile and knew how to encourage others. She and her husband, who was a Hinsdale firefighter, retired in 1987, and they moved to Vero Beach, Florida because of their love of the warmer weather and the beach. She and John worked for Dodgertown as food servers for many years. She stayed devoted to her children by visiting them and sending cards often where she wrote “You are in my thoughts and prayers.” After living in Vero Beach for over 30 years, John and Joan moved to Largo, Florida where their daughter, Elaine, lived. Joan moved in with her daughter while her husband lived in an assisted living facility due to health problems. Throughout her years Joan found great pleasure in baking, traveling, swimming in the ocean, walking, working on jigsaw puzzles, and attending mass as she was a life-long devoted Catholic. In her later years she enjoyed line-dancing, water aerobics and music concerts. In the past year and a half, she enjoyed attending Maria’s Adult Day Care Center in Seminole Florida. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, John Miller, who died on November 20, 2021. She will be greatly missed. A mass and celebration of life will take place in the Chicago area on June 24, 2023, which is near the date of John and Joan’s wedding anniversary.
