Hazel Elizabeth Garrison (née Bey), age 88, of Sun City, Florida, passed away on Saturday, January 17th 2014. Hazel was born on November 16, 1926 in Miami, FL, to Rosetta and David Bey. She married her first husband, Merrill Eugene Tharp, in 1944 in Miami, FL, with whom she had two children. She married her second husband, Carl Newton Garrison, in Springfield, MO in 1977 with whom she traveled the country and owned the successful Strauss Drapery. Hazel was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Springfield, MO, for a number of years and after moving to Florida continued to attend services during visits until she could no longer travel. Long the matriarch of her family, she is survived by her sister, Betty Bey Scofield, her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Bedell of Apollo Beach, FL, and her son, Earl Eugene Tharp, of Lake of the Ozarks, MO, as well as five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, 10 of her 11 siblings, two husbands, one great-grandchild, and many friends. Hazel was well known for her strong work ethic, kindness, joy, endurance, and religious faith, and will be terribly missed. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24th 2014 at Serenity Funeral Home, located at 13401 Indian Rocks Road, Largo, FL, 33774. May she rest in peace, and take her well-earned place amongst the heavens.
