Daniel Guthrie Morrison, Jr., 75, of Seminole, FL, passed away on July 24, 2023. He was born on January 21, 1948 in Glasgow, KY and was the only child of Virginia and Daniel “Dee” Morrison, and he grew up in Bowling Green, KY. Dan graduated from College High and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Kentucky University. After college graduation, he attended umpire school and he later served as an instructor. This led to his 25-year career as a Major League Baseball umpire. In the off-seasons, he also worked at the former Allen’s Sports Center and as a referee for high school basketball in Pinellas County.
After meeting at the St. Pete Pier, he married Gayle on January 15, 1983, and their life together was filled with love and joy. Together, they enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean. They have dedicated their lives to raising their only daughter, Danielle, and later helping to care for their two young grandchildren. Dan spent the early years of Danielle’s career as a teacher helping to volunteer in the classroom and chaperoning field trips.
Dan loved the sport of golf and could often be found swinging his clubs as a member of Clearwater Country Club. He was a rules official for the United States Golf Association and the Florida State Golf Association for the past 15 years. He worked a tremendous amount of golf tournaments for both amateur and professional golfers’ events. On any given day, you could find him running errands around town, snuggling with his dogs, or laughing with his grandchildren. Dan was often found with a smile on his face and enjoyed making people laugh. He was a loyal friend to all who knew him and would provide them help in any way they needed.
Dan is survived by his wife Gayle (Fortson) Morrison, daughter Danielle (Morrison) Webber (William Webber, Jr.) and grandchildren Lila and Otis Webber. He is predeceased by his parents, Dee and Virginia Morrison.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, July 31, 2023, at Serenity Funeral Home in Largo, FL. A visitation for family and friends will occur on Sunday, July 30, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
