Sandra was born in Grand Rapids, MI, on February 5, 1938, to Robert and Peg (Smith) Courtright, and grew up on a farm in rural Okemos, MI, with five siblings. She graduated from Okemos High School in 1957.
She married Robert Mayes in 1958, in Lansing, MI, and they raised four children, first in Lansing and then Mason, MI. She reveled in her role as a stay-at-home mother until her children were in their teens. She also was active in her church, singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed camping with her family and traveled frequently with Robert after his retirement, including taking several trips to Alaska and Hawaii. She and Robert also lived many winters in The Villages, FL.
After high school, she worked at Michigan Millers Insurance in Lansing, MI. After her children were older, she worked for the Shopping Guide, Dart Bank and Farm Credit Services, all in Mason.
She is survived by her sisters, Val Perkins of Sand Lake, MI, and Marilyn (David) Morgan of Grand Rapids, MI; children, Sheryl (Terry) Stephens of Holt, MI; Steven (Nancy) Mayes of Mason; Michael (Lynn) Mayes of Eaton Rapids, MI; and Mark (Holly) Mayes of Holt, MI; as well as 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2022 as well as three brothers, Robert Jr., Gary and Dick Courtright.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing.
