Michelina DeRose

Michelina DeRose, age 99, of Lansing, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 surrounded by those who love her. She was born on June 23, 1923 in Leslie, Michigan to Amelia (Scarcello) DeRose and John DeRose.

Michelina graduated from Leslie High School in 1941, obtained her Bachelor's degree from Siena Heights in Adrian, Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University with her Master's degree in education. She taught at Flushing High School, Chelsea High School and retired from Lansing Eastern High School after over 30 years of teaching. She was gifted with a long life and she considered God, her Catholic faith, family, her Italian heritage and her many loving friends as the most precious gifts in her life. She traveled extensively, enjoyed reading and family genealogy. After retirement, she worked at Lansing Community College and volunteered at Sparrow Hospital in the neonatal unit.

She is survived by her sisters, Marie Sanford and Patricia (Glen) Lewis; her nieces, Susan (Dave) Wilcox, Nancy Baran, Mary Elizabeth Trosko, Julie Sanford, Anne (Tom) Brigham, and Amy (Ken) Kowalk; her nephews, David DeRose, John DeRose, Steve DeRose, Michael Sanford, Kevin (Debbie) Sanford, Thomas (Korey) Wheeler; 22 great nieces and nephews; and 12 great-great nieces and nephews.

Michelina was preceded in death by her parents, John and Amelia DeRose, her brothers, Michael DeRose and Victor DeRose, sister-in-law, Dolores DeRose, and brother-in-law, Lyndon Sanford.

Visitation will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 from 4pm until the time of rosary at 5:30pm at Gorsline Tiffany Funeral Home (3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 10:30am at St. Gerard Catholic Church with Fr. John Klein officiating. Mass will be preceded by visitation beginning at 9:30am at the church. (4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing) Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
