Josefina “Jo” Estrada Romero, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Jo was born to Jose and Josefina Estrada on July 14, 1961 in Lansing, MI. Jo was a graduate of Sexton High School home of the “Big Reds” and had a lifelong career with the Michigan State Police Department (MSP). After 43 years of service, Jo retired from MSP and dedicated her time to her four beautiful children, family, friends, and the neighborhood cats. Jo was a devoted mother, kind and loving sister, an amazing aunt, and provider. She loved animals, especially the neighborhood stray cats, which she provided with food, water, warm blankets, and outdoor heaters so they could survive the winter.
Jo always put others before herself and was the one person the family could always count on for a home cooked Mexican meal. Besides her joy of cooking, hosting family gatherings brought her tremendous joy, especially when we played trompo or loteria. She loved listening to Mexican music, particularly the classics like Ramon Ayala, Cornelio Reyna, and Vicente Fernandez.
Jo was passionate about sharing the love of our Lord with others. The medical staff who cared for her in the hospital were referred to as “her little angels,” and she included them in her nightly prayers. Now that Jo is beginning her eternal life with the Lord, she joins her parents (Jose and Josefina Estrada), Sister (Rosalinda “Rosie” Montemayor), Brothers-in-law (Rafael Montemayor and Larry Campbell), and nephew (Evan Campbell) in heaven.
Jo is survived by her husband Jose Benjamin Romero. Children: Bryan Michael Barrientes, Jose Benjamin Romero, Juliana Josefina Romero, and Marco Antonio Romero. Siblings: Jose Manuel (Herminda Garcia Contreras), Azucena (Duane Kimber), Rodolfo (Michele Estrada), Erlinda Campbell, and Veronica Estrada. Sister-in-law: Maria Esperanza Romero (Rafael Garibay), and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Cristo Rey Church, 201 W. Miller Rd., Lansing, MI 48911, on November 22, 2024.
Visitation 9:30 am - 10:30 am, Mass 10:30 am, Graveside Service 12:00 pm at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, and luncheon to follow at Cristo Rey Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Juliana Romero to assist with care for her siblings.
