Joe was born in Frederick, Maryland to Albert and Grace on March 11, 1941. He married Linda Bess Broadbent on November 16, 1962, in East Lansing, after meeting at Michigan State University. While at school he served in the Army Reserve. After graduating, Joe worked for the State of Michigan for over 30 years. He was involved in The Ruffed Grouse Society and was a former member of The Grand Ledge Country Club and Willow Woods Country Club. Joe was an avid hunter, fisher, and outdoorsman who loved boating and golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Grace Heilman, and baby daughter, Jennifer Anne Heilman.
Joe is survived by his wife, Linda, his children, daughter, Katherine Lynn (John) and son, John Creighton (Cynthia), his brother, David, his granddaughter, Emma Grace, his niece, Emily (Justin), great-nephew, Henry, and the newest member to the Heilman family, great-niece, Clara.
Joe will be missed greatly and remembered often by family and friends for his booming voice, love for MSU sports, and as an enthusiastic grill master.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8th at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Waverly, with Fr. Dave Blank and Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating. Reception to follow at St. David’s. Arrangements by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home.
