Dorothy Ann Christy ended her battle with cancer on March 14, 2012. Dorothy was born in Walnut, IA February 13, 1933. She was raised on the family farm in Walnut and attended country school through 8th grade and later graduated from Walnut High School. She went on to earn a Bachelors Degree of Nursing from the University of Iowa in 1954. While at the University of Iowa Dorothy met and married Phillip M. Christy on September 18, 1954. From their union they had two children, daughter, Carol Jean, born September 14, 1956 and son James Scott, born March 30, 1958. The family moved to Lansing, MI in 1958 and have been residents thereafter. Dorothy was employed as a school nurse for the Lansing Public Schools for over 30 years. During that time Dorothy served on the Michigan Association of School Nurses Board of Directors. She later served as the Michigan representative to the National Association. An award has been established in Dorothy Christy’s name to honor a deserving nurse each year. Dorothy was an active member of Pilgrim Congregational UCC church for 50 years. She was a member of the Bell Choir, acted as Church Clerk and was involved in numerous activities and committees within the church. She also volunteered at Sparrow Hospital for over 15 years. Dorothy was an avid Spartan fan, especially basketball, and enjoyed performances at the Wharton Center. She loved to travel. Dorothy was most happy when she was surrounded by her family and friends especially at their cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan. Surviving to cherish her memory are her beloved husband Phillip Christy; daughter Carol Christy; and son James (Angela) Christy; brother Larry (Sue) Koehrsen; and her sister Betsy (Paul) Becker A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Pilgrim Congregational UCC Church, 125 S. Pennsylvania, Lansing, MI 48912 with the Rev. Peter Robinson officiating. Memorial visitation will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E.
