Donald Leroy Rice, born March 28, 1927 in Holt, the son of the late Lester and Genevieve (Garner) Rice, passed away August 18, 2013 at the age of 86. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II serving in the South Pacific. He worked for General Motors/Fisher Body in Lansing for 37½ years, retiring in 1981. He was very active in the churches he attended in Michigan and Florida and taught children and youth Sunday School classes for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Don was a very generous man, always there to help anyone who needed it. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Bettie Hart; sons Donald Robert Rice and Donald LeRoy Rice II. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Ruth A. Rice; three daughters, Susan (Roger) Adsit, Patricia Stoye and Ruth Ann Griffin; one son, William J. (Amy) Rice; nine grandchildren, Amanda Adsit, Gabriel and Sergio Griffin, Angela (Nabil) Kanazeh, Ronald (Lisa) Rawlings, Donald (DJ) and Nicole Rice, Christine (Mike Ryan) Stoye and Carrie (Wesley) Swanson; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Billie Smith and Bonnie Whitehead. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Grovenburg United Methodist Church, 1368 Grovenburg Rd., Holt, MI with Pastor William Beachy of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00~8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. The family wishes to thank Great Lakes Caring Hospice and Don's nurse, Tammy, for the wonderful care they provided to Don and their support of his family.
