Dear Maureen, 

I'm so sad to learn of your moms passing.  She was such a great friend & even though there were long pauses between our get togethers, we could catch up in the blink of an eye.   I was also saddened to hear that your dad has passed.   Sending hugs to you.

I was so fortunate to have Carol as a co-worker at MEA where we developed a lifelong friendship.  We were planning a visit this summer, but even though that did not happen, we enjoyed our phone visits.  We shared a strong friendship with Fran Hadden through the years.  I am so sad to lose a friend as special as Carol.  My heart goes out to you.

We were eight first cousins on my father’s side, half of them Carol, Tom, and my brother Bryan and me. My mother Marjorie and Aunt Pauline were great friends, and whenever our families got together we had some special fun … like the time they came up from South Bend and we and our moms ate Halloween dinner at our house on Lansing’s northwest side, and then we kids went out trick-or-treating. We hadn’t gotten very far when an older neighbor down the street had us come in for a few minutes, and then our moms knocked on the door — they had paper bag ‘masks’ on, tricking us more than Mrs. Preston — then they came in for a few drinks while we did the rest of our rounds.
      Another time our two families met at a cabin up north for a summer week in 1954, making some more good memories the summer before my mom passed. In one photo, our moms posed at the little bar, obviously enjoying themselves, and another photo shows a broadly smiling Carol sitting on the bar, legs crossed at the knee, six-year-old queen of the cabin. Our families visited the same log cabin a few years later for a long weekend. My father had remarried by then, and the cabin had been modernized. One of the additions to the decor was a one-armed-bandit atop the bar, and I think this was most likely the time and place where Carol began her life-long investigations into the intricacies of slot machine behavior.
    They had moved to Grand Ledge (just west of Lansing) by then, and our family moved to a house one block down from them shortly after that. So the good times continued, as Tom and Bryan went to MSU and I followed shortly after, and Carol began at MSEA.

Carol Bergin sister, mother, aunt and friend was a beloved lady. She was always thinking of others with kindness and her spiritual love. Her deep love of her Catholic faith was evident in all her actions.
The family, friends and neighbors knew her kindness and giving nature. 

As family we will miss Carol. Her birthday and Christmas was celebrated with her in person or through the mail and phone. She loved bunnies and each spring I would look for bunnies
on towels or in ceramics for her. She always appreciated everyone in the family, with special attention to the children. 

Times were not easy after her beloved Chris passed. Maureen was always there for Carol and is a very special daughter. Carol’s love of others was evident in her family and friends. She will be missed
by all those she touched with her loving heart and beautiful soul.

Maureen,  I am so sorry for the sudden passing of your dear mom. She loved you dearly.  May it comfort your heart to know that she is now whole and free in the presence of the Lord.  May the God of all comfort bless and strengthen you during this difficult time.  Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family.
