Stephen was born in Banswara, India on February 4 1955 where his parents Rev. Murray and Margaret Henderson were United Church missionaries. The family returned to Canada when he was a toddler and grew up in Victoria.
As an adult he lived in Vancouver where he knew the transit system well. He could tell you what bus one would need to get from one place to another.
Stephen enjoyed visiting the various malls where he could walk and shop. You’d often find Stephen at the local A & W drinking his coffee and chatting with whomever he met there. He was an avid BC Lions fan for many years. In his younger years he loved watching wrestling at the old BCTV studios.
Stephen had a collection of classic movies that he enjoyed watching. He looked forward to the PNE each year where he came home with treasures that were being marketed.
Stephen had medical challenges throughout his life. He met them head on and fought with courage. Over the years, Stephen had many brain surgeries in the hopes that his epileptic seizures would one day stop. Stephen suffered a major brain trauma in 2015 from which he never recovered. He had resided at Holy Family Hospital for a number of years. He was affectionately known as “his Nibs” by his brother Graham. Graham and his wife Estilita visited him regularly and would Facetime twice a week and have coffee with him.
Stephen was predeceased by his loving parents, younger brother Rob, sister-in-law Molly and brother-in-law Max. He will be dearly missed by his brother Graham (Estilita), sisters Kathy and Glenys (Bill), along with his nephew, nieces and their families: Matthew (Meredith, Jayden, Kaelan, Ciara), Christina (Terence, Miguel, Deklan), Kaitlyn (Deryk, Karter), Lindsay (Colten, Alec), Cathy (Fab, Sophia, Marcus).
Immense gratitude and thanks to the staff at Holy Family Hospital who were so patient with Stephen over the years. You hold a special place in our hearts.
A memorial service will be held this summer. If so desired, donations to the Epilepsy Society of BC, Holy Family Hospital, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Stephen you are now free to run. Take care brother.
