I remember John as a quiet, kind person. We were partners once in those dreadful ballroom dancing classes in PE. Neither of us wanted to be there. I was grateful that he was taller than  me. Nervous to be dancing with a boy, I left a sweaty scrunched up paw print in his shirt. He didn’t seem to mind.

John sat behind me in grade one class. I remember him sniffling and saying he missed his mom that first day. We never had kindergarten back then. He was always around and always kind. A week before grade 12 grad he called to ask me to grad. My mom whipped up a dress in a day or two. He arrived with a corsage, driving a convertible. The evening was lovely. I remember dancing with his father. There were pictures taken. Late in the night after a few too many drinks he proposed. I laughed at that and found another way home. It was a one and only date. Every so often I’d run into him at the CN train station confectionery where he worked and he’d say hi and ask me if I’d changed my mind about marrying him.  
Years later at a DT reunion his beautiful wife found me in the washroom wanting to know how long we’d been an item. I told her this story about our one and only date and asked why she was asking. Those grad pictures on the mantle at his parents house were the reason. I assured her she had nothing to worry about. I’m so sorry to learn John is gone too soon. So sorry for your loss.   Thank you John and Hollis family for the wonderful memories of DT grad 72.

I just found out I was just in South Surrey and was going to drop him a-line. I’m so sorry I didn’t get to reconnect . RIP ole friend until we meet again. -Andy Sidhu 

I just found out my high school friend and Europe travelling mate has passed on.  I lost contact with John so many years ago and often reflected back to our Europe trip in 1973-1974.  It saddens me to think that we never reconnected after all those years.  John had many friends in David Thompson during our high school years.

Mr. Hollis was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Had the pleasure of being his student in Tamanawis 2009. Always laughing and wanting to chat about sports, especially hockey. Always approachable and never made any students feel inferior or intimidated. One of a kind. Extremely saddened to hear about his passing! Gone too soon. Condolences to the Hollis family. The world lost a good one but Heaven gained an angel. Rest In Peace, Mr. Hollis.

Mr Hollis was a great human and one of the best teachers I had. RIP Mr. Hollis, you will be dearly missed. 

Mr Hollis was a wonderful teacher with a heart of Gold. I was in his business co-op class back in 2004 at Tamanawis Secondary. He was truly an amazing human being. You will be truly missed, may you Rest In Peace🙏🏽❤️ 

Mr Hollis was an amazing teacher and I had the pleasure of being his student from the class of 1996. He was one of the best teachers from his era and knew how to interact with students at a human level. Our daily  sports chats and Tim Hortons doughnut runs during class will be never be forgotten.  Condolences to the Hollis family. RIP Mr Hollis, you were definitely one of the good ones. 

Have fond memories of John at all the Spring family functions Rani and I attended over the years. John was so welcoming and we always had some great  sports talks and laughs over a few pops! He was a wonderful soul! Our sincere condolences to Monica, Mackenzie, Conrad and the entire family.  Cheers and rest easy John! 


We have wonderful memories of our time spent together at Osoyoos . Too much eating ,too much drinking and always lots of laughter.  Sincere condolences  to Monica , McKenzie , Conrad and all the family and friends  .RIP John x

I was fortunate to meet and to know John at Tamanawis Secondary.  He was easy to talk to, and shared funny stories.  He will be missed by his friends/colleagues at TSS.  My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

John was a happy, kind and fun person. His love of people came through in his teaching.  I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get to know John working together at Tamanawis. 

I have very fond memories of John.  He had such a great sense of humour and a wonderful laugh.  John was one of a kind.

I was Mr. Hollis' student eons ago but I wanted his family to know I never forgot him. He was part of making my time at Tamanawis so memorable and I was truly lucky to call him a teacher and role model. I'm sorry to hear about his passing but I consider myself one of the lucky ones to have been taught by him I guess more than a decade ago now! To the Hollis family: thank you for sharing your husband/father with all of us students/Tamanawis Wildcats. He was part of shaping us in to the people we are today and we are better for it.
