He was born on January 17, 1943, to the late Clarence Collins and Margaret Louise Streitenberger-Collins in Lancaster, OH. Steve was a graduate of Lancaster High School, class of 1961. He served in the Army National Guard from 1963 to 1969 and was honorably discharged after achieving the rank of Sergeant (E-6). Following his military service, Steve spent 25 years with the Lancaster Police Department. He retired in 1995 as a Detective. Immediately after his retirement, Steve became a bailiff at the Fairfield County Common Pleas Court where he worked for another nine years. He was a member of many local civic organizations including AmVets, the American Legion, the Moose, and the Eagles. Steve was an avid reader of American history. He loved golfing, bowling (where he earned a 300 series ring), and his dogs, Lady and Jack. Steve was preceded in death by his parents and sister Clara (Mick) Carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Maggy Brown-Collins, his son, Pastor Andrew William Collins, his grandchildren Mac Collins and Alyssa Jo Collins, and his siblings, Arlene Boggs, Ann Bushee, Laura Griffin, Sarah Hadley, Tom Collins, Marion Curtis, and Mary Bradford Lambert.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Fairfield Medical Center, Hospice, Care Tenders, Mt. Carmel East, Becky Tener, Debbie Probasco, Mike Stark, the Brian Beam family, Mary Nibert, Mark and Timmie Hintz, and Linda Poling for the excellent care and support they provided Steve. Donations may be made in Steve’s honor to Fairfield Medical Center Foundation or Fairfield Area Humane Society. Cremation has occurred and private services will be held at a later date.
