Carol (“Carol, like Christmas!” as she would say) was born in Charleston, WV. She attended Parkersburg Community College where she received her Associate Degree in Nursing, followed by Marshall University where she received her Bachelor Degree in Nursing. While at Marshall, she was a dedicated member of the Phi Mu sorority, which remained near and dear to her.
After marrying Steve on June 30, 1979, and moving to Ohio, Carol spent many years as a Nurse, primarily at Grant Medical Center (aka “The Miracle Center”). She also spent many years as a clinical nursing instructor at Columbus State Community College. She made a significant impact on both co-workers and students.
Carol will be remembered most for her generous heart, sense of humor, fashion sense, and her unyielding spirit. Despite a life-long battle with health issues, she always had a smile, a joke, and a song. She was full of funny sayings, nicknames “Carol-isms”, and would do anything to help someone in need. She loved spending time with her family, friends, and pets, attending church, researching family ancestry, and visiting Pensacola Beach.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Steve; her two children, Jackie Soler (Steven) and Brian Barnett; her granddaughter Hallie Soler; and many cousins and friends. Carol’s greatest joy for 16 months was her granddaughter, who inspired her to fight until the last day.
Carol didn’t want anyone “crying over her”; she wanted “a party” for everyone to celebrate the good times and memories. A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at a later date.
Donations can be made in her honor to Kobacker House in Columbus, Ohio, or the American Cancer Society.
