Beverly Hawley, aged 92, resident of Lancaster, California, went home to be with Jesus on April 19, 2024, while surrounded by family. Born to Norman and Dorothy (Bates) Bowlus on November 8, 1931, Beverly was preceded in death by first husband, Dan O. Bland, with whom she had two daughters, Lisa Locke (Brett) and Jill Kreiger (Bill). Her second husband, Kenneth G. Hawley, died in 2017.
In addition to her daughters, Beverly is survived by eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. All of her great grandchildren play an instrument, with the exception of the youngest who was born in March, following in their piano-playing grandmother’s footsteps. She is also survived by younger sisters Ruth Crowell and Mary Elenbaas and five nieces and nephews. Brother Richard Bowlus passed away in 2015.
A life-long animal lover, Bev began her college career at Michigan State University as an animal husbandry major, one of two women in the program at that time. Although she didn’t finish her degree there, she enjoyed the horses, dogs and cats that graced her life.
Beverly and Dan moved to Arizona early in their marriage, welcoming two daughters and building a 12-unit Japanese-themed resort apartment development in Carefree. Beverly always threatened to “write a book” about the six years she spent managing the An-Raku-En property.
Shortly after moving the family to Northridge, California, Dan died after a short illness in 1973, leaving Bev to raise 12-year-old Jill and 14-year-old Lisa alone. She returned to school at California State University, Northridge, to earn her BA in English, subsequently working as an office manager, a Social Security employee and for Weyerhauser Corporation.
After raising her daughters, Bev moved to San Diego, near sister Ruth, and found work at Scripps Clinic, where she worked in the Dental Clinic in marketing and conference planning. She married Ken in 1983, later moving to Albuquerque and then Lancaster to be nearer her grandchildren. A long battle with skin cancer led to the loss of her right eye, but Bev never complained. She and Ken moved to Pagosa Springs, Colorado in 2012 to be near Lisa and the lovely Colorado mountains. Health problems took them back to Albuquerque in 2015. She relocated to Lancaster in 2017 after Ken’s death.
Her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren will gather with other extended family to celebrate her life in San Diego in July 6 with a seaside viewing near Point Loma Lighthouse as her ashes are scattered in the Pacific Ocean, followed by a memorial and lunch at the home of her sister Ruth.
