Born in Tarentum, PA, he was a former resident of Freehold Twp., NJ for 40 years before moving to Lakewood, NJ. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy in 1952, he went on to receive his MBA in Hospital Administration from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. Ugo’s career in health care began with a residency in hospital pharmacy at the Jefferson Medical College Hospital in Philadephia, PA. Ugo was Director of Pharmacy at the Yale Medical Center in New Haven, CT, Assistant Administrator at the Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, VA, Associate Administrator at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, NY, Assistant Administrator at the Calvary Hospital in Bronx, NY, Assistant Administrator for Freehold Hospital in Freehold, NJ and retired in 1995 from the Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, NJ. He was a charter member of both the Men’s Club and the DaVinci Club at the Enclave of Lakewood, NJ. He was an avid reader and was passionate about his family and his profession. Ugo was a gentle man and always a gentleman.
Son of the late Tommasina (Provenzano) and Cesare Caruso, he was predeceased by his siblings,Frances Scaglione, Bernard Caruso, and Dolores Jager.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Dorothy Marlene (Protzek); 3 children, Ann E. Caruso and her husband Gary Goldschmidt; Thomas C. Caruso and his wife Eve, and Sharon Caruso-Mills and her husband Donald; five grandchildren, Zachary, Ross, and Jonathan Caruso, Daniel and Nicole Goldschmidt; a sister-in-law, Polly Caruso; a brother-in-law, Edward Jager; and several nieces and nephews.
To honor his wishes, there will be no viewing. His life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 18, 2012, in the D’Elia Funeral Home, Rte. 70 & Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. His family will receive relatives and friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
