Virginia (Ginger) DeSmet Karpovich, 90, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by loved ones and her beloved pets in the early hours of November 19, 2024. She was born on September 21, 1934, in Passaic, New Jersey. Virginia was the youngest child of Felix and Ethel (Owen) DeSmet. Virginia and her older brothers Phillip (Sonny) and Donald were raised by her paternal grandparents, Alfons and Philomonia (DeBock) DeSmet.
Virginia was raised in Carlstadt, New Jersey, she met John J. Karpovich Jr. and the two married in East Rutherford, New Jersey on April 11, 1953. The couple had five children: Debra (b. 1955), Mark (b. 1956), John (b. 1958), Kathleen (b. 1959 d. 2008) and Noreen (b. 1962). Their children were raised in the Catholic faith and Virginia maintained her faith throughout her life.
Despite all the trials and tribulations that life gave her, there was always a great amount of love in the house. Deciding a life change was in order, Virginia moved to Lakewood, Colorado in 1976. She went on to work in the ceramics division at CoorsTek for 18 years before retiring.
Virginia loved collecting angels, bells and teacup sets, displaying them along with many figurines, plaques and poems that reflect the pride she had of her heritage. One of her favorite Irish blessings was "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."
Holidays were always a special time, she enjoyed decorating the house and cooking over the top, large meals where family and friends were always welcome. Her Thanksgiving meals were always memorable with a minimum of ten side dishes, along with at least three types of pies. She was also known for her amazing spaghetti sauce and cheesecake.
Virginia was a loving, kind, caring lady who was willing to anyone in need. She loved her very large extended family very much and had many dear friends throughout her life. She loved animals, often taking in strays and pets that needed to be re-homed and giving them their best life.
Virginia is survived by her children; Debra, Mark, John and Noreen and grandchildren; Christopher, Bridget, Teresa, Krista, Amber, Chad, Patrick and Theodore, as well as many great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild. She predeceased by her husband John, daughter Kathleen, grandchildren Jason, Sarah and Stefanie
Virginia will be cremated and interred alongside her husband John in Ft. Logan Cemetary, Denver.
A celebration of life will be planned the in spring to honor her request of "Not making a fuss"
