Thomas Robert Talbot Jr., age 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully Monday, August 21 at Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Lakeway, TX with family by his side. Tom was born on April 5,
1939, in Springfield, Mo., the son of Thomas Robert and Nettie May (Gumm) Talbot Sr. He graduated from Parkview High School in Springfield, MO in 1957. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering (’62) and a masters degree in Business Studies (’66) from the University of Missouri, where he was also a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and served in the ROTC. Tom was proud of his military service in the United Stated Army where he achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
In 1967, Tom began his 36-year career at IBM, where he was recognized numerous times with the Golden Circle Award for top performance. Tom retired from his distinguished career at IBM in 2002. He was married on October 4, 1969 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Anne Wallace, who survives.
Prior to his retirement, Tom was an active member in the Jefferson City community, including the Rotary Club, and was twice a past president of Jefferson City Country Club. Tom was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church in Jefferson City having served as a Vestry member. Tom held a strong passion for golf his entire life, still playing with dear friends in his 80’s. He also was an avid Mizzou sports fan, always believing this was “their year.”
Tom was a man of positivity, patience, love, and respect. He took immense joy from the little things in life and truly liked making others happy, most importantly his family. His grandkids always knew that “Grandpa Sir” had candy hidden nearby. He loved to cook and had many successes (and a few notable failures) with his experiments in the kitchen – his skills and advice will be greatly missed at Thanksgiving, his favorite holiday. Tom and Anne enjoyed spending winters in Puerto Vallarta for decades and established many great friendships in Mexico.
Survivors include: his loving wife of 54 years, Anne; two children, Dr. Thomas Robert Talbot III (wife Dr. Keipp Bredenberg Talbot) of Nashville, TN, and William W. Talbot (wife Sonja Kelly Talbot) of Lakeway, TX; two grandsons (Thomas Robert Talbot IV, William Wallace Talbot II) and two granddaughters (Anna Kathleen Talbot, Ayres Kelly Talbot); one brother, Jack Gumm Talbot (wife Sally) of Springfield, Mo; sister-in-law Patricia Wallace Jones (husband Richard); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the United Way of Central Missouri in Tom’s memory.
