Renee was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on September 15, 1953 to David Paul Fowler and Mary Emma Welsh Fowler. She grew up in Fort Worth and Irving and graduated from Irving High School. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Texas Lutheran College in 1976.
On July 1, 1978, she married Steve Porter. Renee had the gift of teaching and taught high school to put her husband through law school. She then devoted herself to raising their two sons, Travis Allen and Thomas John. The family resided in Austin for 27 years before she and Steve moved to Washington, DC.
Renee enjoyed family vacations, and would delight in researching every destination. She loved beauty and working in the garden. Through the years they were fortunate to visit many of the world's finest art museums. But mostly, she loved to mentor and disciple young women and model for the next generation the goodness of Christian womanhood. Central to this was her teaching of God's Word. She served as a Teaching Leader for Bible Study Fellowship, International in Austin for 15 years and led numerous other Bible studies during her 9 years in DC.
Renee was preceded in death by her father, David Paul Fowler. She is survived by her mother, Mary Fowler; husband of 39 years, Steve Porter; her sons, Travis and Thomas and their wives, Christina and Teryl; her siblings, Sharon Ruth Williamson, Dr. John Fowler and his wife Donna, Nancy Walls and her husband Kent, and Mary Ann Woodrow; and the grandsons she adored, Trace and Tanner Porter. She is also survived and loved by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The visitation will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 6pm-8:30pm, at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home at 411 Ranch Rd 620 South, Lakeway, TX. 78734. The service celebrating her life will be held Saturday January 13, 2018 at 11am at All Saints Presbyterian Church, 7808 Rialto Blvd, Austin, TX 78735. A reception at the church will follow. A graveside service for the family will be held Saturday afternoon.
Renee did love beautiful flowers, but even more so the beauty of Scripture. Therefore, the family would greatly appreciate, in lieu of flowers, that a donation in Renee's memory be given to Bible Study Fellowship, International, at bsfinternational.org or Bible Study Fellowship Global Headquarters, 19001 Huebner Rd., San Antonio, TX. 78258-4019.
