George Strother Burke passed away peacefully on June 14, 2022. A private graveside service was held in Austin, Texas on June 27, 2022. George was preceded in death by his wife, Lynne Lowry Burke, his twin brother, John Malcolm Burke, and his parents, John Moore Burke, Jr. and Elena Tyng Burke.
He is survived by his son, Fred Burke (Matthew Pavesic), daughter Kathryn Burke McWilliams (Scott), granddaughter Chloe McWilliams, and brother David Burke. George was born in Tyler, Texas on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 1934. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, attending North Texas State University and the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and the Newman Club (Catholic student organization). George had a long career with the State Board of Insurance in Austin, Texas.
Particularly interested in financial matters, George was generous with his money, often helping people who had been there for his family. George and Lynne, his wife of 48 years, loved Port Aransas, Texas, where George spent his days deep sea fishing while Lynne hunted for sharks’ teeth. They also enjoyed playing the slot machines in Coushatta and traveling to Del Rio to visit their granddaughter, Chloe.
George embodied the generosity, honesty, and friendliness of his Texas roots. He never met a stranger, frequently striking up conversations with neighbors, passersby, and even fellow shoppers at HEB. George was a loving and devoted husband to Lynne, tirelessly caring for her during her brief battle with cancer and longer battle with rheumatoid arthritis.
