Danny Johns Akers, 54, son of former University of Texas football coach Fred Akers and Diane Akers, went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2016 at home in Horseshoe Bay, Texas after an inspiring and incredible battle with Renal Cell Carcinoma. He was surrounded by family and was at peace.
Danny was born on January 10, 1962 in Port Arthur, Texas but called Austin his home from early childhood. He was a decorated quarterback and graduate of McCallum High School and played football under the tutelage of his father and mentor at the University of Texas. He began his professional career working with Lou Tice at The Pacific Institute in Seattle, Washington and it was there that he started his family and began raising three amazing children, Alix, Hunter, and D. Lynn.
Danny moved back to Austin in 2000 to raise his children as a single father. He loved being the positive force molding his kids on a daily basis, and he devoted his personal life to all of the events that were important to his children. He was always hands on and completely engaged with his family.
Fred and Danny Akers formed The Akers Performance Group in 2000, and enjoyed shaping the leadership skills of athletes, managers, business owners, CEO's, teams, companies, and government agencies worldwide. Danny was an amazing speaker who was able to connect with people from all walks of life. He dedicated himself to living what he was teaching, and that energy was contagious.
Danny loved life and the people involved in it. And that means any person he ever spoke with was touched by his inspiring words and enthusiasm. Danny was the guy you'd go to when you needed someone to listen, and really listen. He never judged but guided in a very positive and loving way. He was never too busy...for anyone-and he noticed...everyone.
Danny saw every conversation as an opportunity to learn and uplift. He was a fun-loving, gentle, compassionate man who truly cared for every person he was in contact with. Danny simply loved life and loved people and helping people see the best in themselves. He made a difference to everyone he was around.
In the latter part of his life, he was able to channel the strength of his mindset to overcome challenging circumstances. When he was told he would have less than two years to live, he refused to affirm his diagnosis. After a risky yet life saving surgery, the cancer returned and Danny sought out alternative methods of healing and lived for 4 very full and purposeful years through prayer, love of family, nutrition and mind over matter. He loved the Lord and was a dedicated servant of people, and his love of others rings true to all who knew him. Those who knew and love Danny consider him a medical miracle.
Danny was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents O.H. and Edna Akers, honorary grandfather Mitchell Johns, and maternal grandparents Fred and Frances Inmon and Uncle Donnie Inmon.
Danny leaves a wonderful legacy for his son Hunter and daughters Alixandra and D. Lynn and only grandson Aaron; his sisters Lesli Akers and Stacey Delmonico, brother in law Bobby Delmonico; his nephew Zachary, and nieces Charli and Lesli Ryan Delmonico; and his Uncle David and Aunt Karen Inmon; and a host of loving friends.
The family would like to thank all of the friends who have written, called and reached out in love for Danny. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at noon at Riverbend Church in Austin. Prior to the service, 10am-11:30am, there will be fellowship with friends and family in Fellowship Hall at Riverbend Church.
Should you be inclined to send flowers, the family politely requests white flowers and or greenery. In lieu of flowers, a charitable donation may be made to Life Austin Church for TEAM FOCUS, an organization which teaches a multitude of life lessons to fatherless boys.
