Mr. Charles “Chuck" Frank Denman, of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 30th, 2022, at 1:53pm. He was 88 years old. He was surrounded by his loving family as well as his devoted caregivers.
Chuck was born on May 8th, 1934, in Grapeland, Texas to parents James Howard and Mary Jane Denman. He was the youngest of 5 brothers and 1 sister. While they referred to him as ‘Sonny’ the name Chuck stuck with him throughout his life. Chuck graduated from Grapeland High School. Afterwards, he graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in 1955. Following graduation, he later attended The South Texas College of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor (JD) for Law in 1967.
Prior to graduating from Law School, he met and married his sweetheart, Gail Carlene (Smith) Denman in 1962. Married for over 50 years, together, they loved to play golf, tennis, socialize at the country clubs, attend church, and most of all they loved to go to dances and ‘cut a rug.’ Along the way, they raised two beautiful and loving daughters, Kimberly, and Yvonne.
Chuck was a friend to everyone. He was very athletic, social, and charming. While at Sam Houston State University, he developed this sense of style and leadership by serving as President of the Student Body and as a “Yell Leader.” Upon graduating, he was drafted into the United States Army where he served our country honorably. Following his service to our country in the military, he transitioned to a first job as a high school Typing Teacher. Then, he was hired to be an Accountant for Amoco. Deciding he wanted to do more, his ambition led him to many notable accomplishments in business and law. These accomplishments include becoming a Licensed and Practicing Attorney, as a Member of the Texas Bar Association. These experiences led Chuck to serve as General Counsel for Star Engraving, eventually becoming their President. He also served as Trust Officer for Houston Bank & Trust, and also as Secretary & General Counsel for Sysco Foods. It was there he was credited for moving the company from the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In addition to those prestigious positions, he also served as Vice President for Oncor Corporation, Executive Vice President for Paragon Properties, and then Senior Vice President for First City Bank. Deciding to return to his roots in law, Chuck joined the Firm of Jenkins & Gilchrest and then practiced law at Anson, Maloney & Cameron. He later joined Sheinfeld, Maley & Kay. During this time of practicing law, Chuck supported the family real estate business, Denman & Associates Realtors. There he helped with business development and relationship management in support of his wife, Carlene, and daughter Kimberly.
Of note, Chuck also served voluntarily on many boards. These included being a loyal and long-time member of The Rotary Club, and Financial Executives International (FEI) where he received an ‘FEI Lifetime Achievement Award.’ In addition to that award, Chuck was also a “Marquis Who’s Who” for his banking successes and business acumen. Altogether, these successes in the business community compelled Chuck to “give back” more. So, he and his wife, Carlene involved themselves in several personal charitable organizations. Those included The Gathering (Alzheimer’s Volunteers), Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Wounded Warriors. He was also a devoted follower of Christ, who was heavily involved with the members of Austin Baptist Church and Lakeway Church. Not to forget that Chuck and Carlene were both very social, they were members of the Metropolitan Club of Austin, the Austin Country Club, the Barton Creek Country Club, and the Hills of Lakeway. There, he loved to see his friends and enjoy a round of golf.
Chuck is survived by a large and loving family. This includes his youngest daughter, Yvonne Denman and his eldest daughter, Kimberly Denman Hundley, and her husband Michael Hundley who have six children as Chuck’s grandchildren, Heather Storrar Alvarez married to Antonio Alvarez, Blythe Kathleen Dougherty married to James William Dougherty, Ryan Charles Storrar, John-Paul Denman Storrar, Hannah Hundley and fiancé Josh Herrera and Cody Hundley. Chuck is also blessed with three great- granddaughters, Georgia Dougherty, Audrey Alvarez and Hailey Herrera. In addition to those, his close surviving family members include Kathy Denman Post and husband, Mike Post, Thomas Paul Denman and wife, Colleen Denman, Todd Denman and wife, Rose Denman, Lisa Denman, Carolyn Blakely, Suzanne Smith Schlindwein, Pamela Power Hill and Alex Power.
