Born on May 16, 1925 in Portage, PA, he was the son of the late Harry and Madge (Seese) Norman.
Residing in Lake Worth for the past 12 years, he lived in Broward County for the previous 43 years. As a teacher of Sciences at Northeast High School, it was his privilege to attend numerous universities through grants from the National Science Foundation ie, Universities at Arizona, Wyoming, Seattle Pacific, Michigan State, Rutgers, Princeton, and Washington State where he received his Master’s Degree. His undergraduate work was completed at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with additional studies at Universities of Pittsburgh, Penn State and Florida Atlantic.
His love of teaching carried through Middle, High and Adult Evening Schools, Enjoying a number of years in the development of the Science program at Margate Elementary in Broward County. While working as Science liaison to target under-performing students, he opened opportunities to gain attendance into college level studies. He believed that if students applied themselves, their degree of knowledge could be greatly enhanced, especially when parent involvement was evident. “Attitude determines altitude” was a borrowed phrase from Margate Middle School that Mr. Norman sincerely believed. His tenet of philosophy was “As a man thinketh, so he will be,” teaches that if you think you can, you can!
Volunteering to serve his country in World War II, after basic training, he served honorably in the European theater as a member of the 327th Radar and Searchlight Battalion. He has been a member of the American Legion Post 430 for over 71 years.
Mr. Norman is survived by his wife Rheta, two daughters, Susan Malvin, husband John of The Villages, FL and Kathleen Davis, husband Bret of Boynton Beach, FL and a son, William Jr., and his wife Hitomi of Thompson’s Station, TN, and his grandchildren whom he dearly loved; Andrew and Stacy McGinnis, Meagan and Wade Davis, and Jacqueline Malvin. His sister Margaret Ellis is his last remaining sibling and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all that have known him.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday May 27 from 9-10am at the Dorsey-E. Earl Smith Funeral Home, 3041 Kirk Road, Lake Worth. Funeral services will follow at 10am. Entombment will take place at the Fero Memorial Gardens, Beverly Hills, FL on Tuesday May 30.
