Michael was born in Beardstown, Illinois. He graduated from Beardstown High School, earned his bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at Western Illinois University, and achieved another master’s degree at Southern Illinois University. Michael was a retired college administrator at the Jefferson Community and Technical College. He was previously a school librarian, high school teacher, and volunteer fireman.
Michael moved to La Grange, Kentucky in 2013. He was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church.
Michael had a great sense of humor and loved making his family and friends laugh. He adored his children and grandchildren. Michael enjoyed traveling, reading, collecting fire and rescue memorabilia, barbecuing, writing and visiting pen pals in the US and abroad, and following his favorite sports teams which included the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Blackhawks, and UK basketball.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold and Betty Walters.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Walters; children, Christopher Walters of Odenton, Maryland, Jennifer Walters of Lakewood, Colorado, and Timothy Walters of Chicago, Illinois; stepchildren Lee Kaiser (Alethea) of La Grange, Kentucky, and Chris Kaiser (Amy) of Milton, Wisconsin; step-grandchildren, Connor and Annie Stenson, Maggie, Ellie, Luke, and Tate Kaiser.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, December 30, 2022 at 4pm with a memorial gathering from 2pm until the start of the service at Heady-Radcliffe Funeral Home, 706 W Jefferson St, LaGrange, KY 40031.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Michael's memory to Supporting Heroes, 11400 Decimal Dr, #1002, Louisville, KY 40299.
