John Orville Jeffries, of LaGrange, KY, passed away on May 26, 2023. John was born on November 2, 1933 to Samuel G. and Beulah (Vest) Jeffries. He was a very gifted child and was promoted to grade 3 when he was 6 years old. He was in high school when he was 12. He graduated, with honors, from LaGrange High School when he was 12. being financially unable to go to college after high school, he worked for the Lincoln Bank And Trust and L&N railroad until the summer of 1955. In June, 1955, he enrolled in Georgetown College where he worked in the business Office and still managed to graduate Magna Cum Laude in three years, In 1958 he was named one of the top 15 college graduates in the country and was awarded a carnegie Fellowship to Vanderbilt University where he received his Master's degree and worked toward the Ph.D. degree in 1959. He also attended the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the Southern Baptist Seminary. After graduate school, he taught one year each at Oldham County and Owen County High Schools. In 1961, along with Dr. Bruce Heilman, he was hired to start Kentucky Southern College. He worked there for eight years as Assistant to the president until it was absorbed by the University of Louisville. He taught for one year at Waggener High and U.L. He then served as Controller of AL J. Schneider Company and 16 affiliated corporations for 35 years. For several years, he also taught Accounting in the evening school at Jefferson Community College Southwest.
John was a talented pianist and played for churches in Lexington, Louisville, Oldham and Trimble counties. He also served as pianist for both the Oldham and Trimble Hymn Sings for many years. He was a Charter member of Dehaven Baptist Church in LaGrange. He was also a member of Georgetown College's President's Club and Pawling's Hall Society as well as numerous professional organizations. John was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mable Jean Jeffries Lyall and brother Donald Ray Jeffries. He is survived by a nephew, Jason Jeffries (Tovah); great nephew; Carter Jeffries; great niece; Brynn Jeffries, Sister- in- Law Rayda Jeffries, her Mother; Ella Webster, and by a host of cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 4, 2023 at DeHaven Baptist Church from 1pm until a musical tribute commences at 2pm. The funeral service will begin at 2:30pm with burial to follow at Valley of Rest in LaGrange.
In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either Georgetown College or Dehaven Baptist Church.
