Mrs. Bishop was born September 5, 1920 in Grantville, GA, daughter of the late Jim Powers and Elizabeth Osborne Powers. She graduated from Grantville High School and was the Captain of her women’s basketball team. Mrs. Bishop was retired from Southern Bell. She was the last living sibling of eight children. Mrs. Bishop moved to Atlanta in 1992 and later to Delmar Gardens in Smyrna, GA and was a member of First Baptist Church of Smyrna, GA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James Hubert Bishop. She was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, and a friend to many. All who knew her enjoyed her great sense of humor, her hospitality, and her delicious southern cooking.
Survivors include four children, Larry and Jane Bishop of Snellville, GA, Gerri and Michael Brooks of Smyrna, GA, Callie Bishop Thompson of Smyrna, GA, and Lisa Joy Bishop of Marietta, GA; six grandchildren, Paul R. Bishop of Snellville, GA, Michael L. Brooks, Jr. of Marietta, GA, Gus Bishop of Braselton, GA, Meredith Brooks Thomas of Smyrna, GA, Rob Thompson of Memphis, TN, and Zach Thompson of London, England; fourteen great grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Frank Powers and Pastor Peggy Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
