Philip Gene Downs

Philip “Gene” Downs, 92, of LaGrange and a former resident of Newborn Georgia passed away August 14, 2024 at West Georgia Hospice. Mr. Downs was born October 10, 1931 in Bryson City North Carolina the son of the late Thomas & Winnie Kate Howard Downs.

Gene was formerly educated at Blanton Business College and John Marshall Law School. His Church membership at Newborn Methodist was that of serving the Lord and active in the various church leadership roles and activities. As a former city councilman for the city of Newborn thus allowing him to be active and involved in the town’s leadership and events Other interest’s outside his loving family were the Georgia Traffic Association.

Survivors include, His Wife: Beth McWaters Downs; Son and Daughter-in-law, John Philip (Mary Morgan) Downs, Matthew (Rachel) Ayers; Daughters, Deidre Downs (Steve) Dickey, Phyllis Downs, Wendy (David) Sanvidge; Sisters, Agnes (Wayne) Camp, Mickey Donathan, Pansie Wiggins, Kathy (Roger) Chapman; Sisters in laws, VickieSue and Cathy D. McWaters; Brother in laws, Bill (Wanda) McWaters and Jim McWaters; 10 Grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services for” Gene” Downs will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024 11:00 A.M from Newborn Methodist Church, 118 Church St, Newborn, Georgia with the Reverend’s Todd Hilton and Frank Benat, Jr. officiating. The family greatly appreciates any floral tributes but those who wish may make memorial donations to West Georgia Hospice in memory of Gene.
