So sorry to hear of her passing! Miss Loyd was a big part of my high school days not only as my teacher, but also as the advisor of SAGE club! She was a great teacher and friend! I remember lots of laughs and fun memories! She was an inspiration to all of us who aspired to be teachers! You will be missed!

She earned her wings. May God the family peace. She was a beautiful person and so sweet.

I remember her from high school.  She was always smiling and kind.  Even though I live away and have not seen her in years, I know she will be sorely missed by all who are her survivors.

Katha was a neighbor of mine many years ago.  Her entire family was wonderful to Bill and me and she was always willing to help my son on his English assignments. She taught many students in LaGrange and those students were better prepared for college upon leaving her classroom.  She was a beautiful lady and I know she left this world a better place.  God Bless her family!

My thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to Ms. Loyd's family. Ms. Loyd taught me and several of my older siblings during our time at LaGrange High School, and I will always remember her for the enthusiasm with which she approached teaching, the genuine compassion and interest she showed in her students, and her overall positive and joyful nature. She truly cared about her students, not just regarding their academic success but in that she truly cared about each student as an individual. She was simply a joy to be around, and I always admired the enthusiasm with which she approached every day, an enthusiasm that was contagious and inspiring to the rest of her students.

I had Ms. Loyd for Honors American Literature, and during that course, she taught a section on banned books. It was through this section on banned books that I was first exposed to the work of Toni Morrison, specifically Toni Morrison's Beloved, and to the general topic of book banning and censorship. Ms. Loyd's class was also the first English literature course I took that focused solely on American literature as a topic or concept, and now, I'm applying to PhD programs for English literature, planning to concentrate on twentieth-century American literature. She inspired me to continue studying literature in general but also gave me a keen fascination with specifically American literature, as well as a passion against the censorship of literature. 

I would not be who I am without her course and without the profound impact she had on me as a teacher, mentor, and friend. As much as I can praise her as an excellent instructor, however, her greatest attribute was always her general approach to everything around her. No matter what the situation, it seemed she approached everything with a sense of kindness, empathy, compassion, and optimism, and it is this attribute more than anything that I try to emulate when I think back on her. She truly made the world a better place, and I have no doubt that her personality and her sheer skill as an instructor influenced countless students who passed through her classroom to better students and, more importantly, better people. She will be sorely missed but always remembered.

She will truly be missed... she was a amazing teacher and friend... condolences for her family..

My prayers are with the family and friends. She was more than a great teacher to me. When I had her class, my father had a series of heart attacks, and she was the only teacher who visited me at the hospital and gave her constant support. She went above and beyond as a teacher and a person. She will be missed.

Ms. Loyd was a wonderful teacher that introduced me to my favorite book, The Count of Monte Cristo.  Her enthusiasm for writing and literature rubbed off on me and I am grateful to have had such a great teacher and influence in my life.  She will be greatly missed!

My memories began with Ms. Loyd, as a teacher and later as a friend. She always made sure that I knew she GENUINELY cared for my well being. Later, as an adult, I can only hope that she knew that I was returning that genuine love and concern. She will be deeply missed......

When I was a student at La Grange High, from 1967 - 1971, I made a personal observation about what I considered the two types of teachers were that I could have for a course.  I noticed that nearly all of the teachers were very competent in their given fields, were good disciplinarians, and worked hard for their student's sakes.  However, I noticed that, as I said in the beginning, there were two types: those who had their own families with kids, and those who did not, teachers such as Miss Owens, Miss Sherrill, and Miss Smith, Mr. John Mayberry, and Mr. Earl Marsh.   As I had different courses with the teachers there, I found that when I had a teacher in the second category, there was always a bonus to be had by the students.


I noticed that these teachers,once they got to know me better, always seemed to take a more personal, as well as parental, interest in my learning, well-being, deportment, growth, and spiritual, as well as, social development.  I was not the only student who received these benefits; I noticed it with many of my classmates of that time.  I became aware, over the course of the intervening years between that time and now, that the exact nature of the bonus was that each of us received the love and extra care that would have gone to the children that these teachers never had.  We received it from a position of careful professionalism, but we received it nevertheless. 

 
Miss Katha Loyd fell into the category of one of these bonus teachers.  Of course, she was a master of American and English literatures, but when a student was assigned to one of her classes, whether it was at the highest level or at a lower one, he or she received the bonus.  Students love to say, Oh, we got the teacher off the subject today; we got out of 10 minutes of that dreadful The Scarlett Letter', or grammar drill.  Little do the students know that it is always the easiest thing to just go straight through one's lesson plan, especially when one has done it five classes a day, two semesters a year, for 35 years, but usually, in that ten minutes, that may occur once every two to three weeks, the bonus teacher is finding out what important events are going on in the student's lives, what matters to them, what excites them at school, or  if there are any going through a Bad time of one type or another. Teaching next door to Katha's classroom, I would notice students staying a little after class for advice and counseling from Miss Loyd, or just to share a joke, or tell a tale; she always had time to hear what they had to say.  


Although she attended Troup High as a student, no one at La Grange High School ever had as many of those Granger Blue Blood Cells, as Coach Oliver Hunnicutt used to call them, running through her body.  I don't believe Katha was ever happier than when there was one of those  Big Games approaching, for any team, in any sport at LHS, unless she were chaperoning at a Victory Dance after it.  Whenever a Granger team won a Region or an Area Championship, and was ready for a trip to State-level competition, it received the benefits of a Katha Loyd Extravaganza send-off.  Whether it was a victory march through the halls of LHS during the last 20 minutes of school on a Friday, with all the classes turned out into the halls wildly cheering them on; or posters placed on the lockers of each member of the LHS state-bound team; or a bonfire in the high school's parking lot, replete with band, students and wildly cheering cheerleaders and fans; or a simple, but beautiful, blue and white,  Good Luck at State Granger cake dropped by the bus before the team left. 


La Grange High School Homecoming Week always seemed to be one of the penultimate events of the year for her.  She planned and set up Spirit Events, lasting the whole week through: Spirit chain contests by both grade and homeroom, best Spirit door posters for homerooms, a Spirit decoration of an assigned area of LHS contest for each grade level, and locker Spirit decoration contests for individuals.  She picked Spirit themes for each football game, and staged elaborate Spirit pep-rallies nearly every week during, not only the fall sports season, but also during winter sports and spring sports seasons too. She always remembered to mention and recognize the members of the smaller sports that were active during the seasons of the major sports of Football, Basketball, and Baseball.  She would allow the coach of these smaller sports time to talk of team goals and progress, outstanding athletes, upcoming meets, and to name the members on the starting lineups for these sports.  She accomplished all these time consumptive things in addition to teaching five English classes a week, as well as grading and evaluating, with written feedback, the myriad of papers and essays these classes generated.


In her spare time, if there were any at all in a given week, she loved to socialize with her friends and colleagues in the English department, and enjoyed the annual Christmas and end-of year-parties, showers, get-togethers and birthdays celebrated with those friends, and spent quality time with her mother and sister.


Some summers she cruised to exotic destinations such as Cancun, Mexico, where only she and her traveling companions know what adventures came her way.  


Even during her illness at Saint Francis Hospital in Columbus, she amazingly found the strength to be a congenial and gracious host to those who came to see her there.  Her trademark smile never seemed to leave her face, although if one looked closely, one could see there was a price being paid in energy to keep it there.  She talked excitedly to each of her family members, friends, and guests, once again focusing on what of importance was going on in their lives, rather than her own.  


In losing Miss Katha Loyd, all of us have suffered a great loss.  Some have loss a wise mentor; some a close friend; some a beloved teacher; some a treasured co-worker; some a vibrant and spirited cheer sponsor; some a cherished family member, but we are all now much the lesser for her passing. 

She truly epitomizes the saying by Flavia:  Some people come into our lives and quickly go, others leave footprints on our souls, and we are never, ever, the same.

So very sad to read of Katha's passing. What a delightful woman, always had a smile to share and a sweet comment in reference to my daughter (a former student). She loved life and we have been blessed in knowing her.
