Opal Zalina Johnson, 61, of Kokomo, went to be with her LORD at 5:45 AM Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at her residence surrounded by her family. Born October 23, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Johnson and Luvirda Irene (Gross) Johnson. She was a volunteer at the Gilead House, Carver Center, and food pantries, and worked at the Goodwill Store. She was also involved with Habitat for Humanity and donated ample amounts of time at Outreach Programs. She also liked riding her bike, listening to music, singing and playing basketball. She was also very athletic and enjoyed all sports and even had an invitation to play on Chicago's first WNBA basketball team. Survivors include children Euola C. Johnson-Watkins of Markham, IL, Robert O. Johnson of Mankato, MN, and Erikka Z. Johnson of Fairborn, OH, three brothers Samuel K. Johnson of St. Louis, MO, Gilbert O. Johnson of Kokomo Daro (Celestine) Johnson of Kokomo,; two half-sisters Sandra (John) Smith and Doreen (Derek) Smith both of Chicago; three grandchildren Kyle Johnson, Lashawna Johnson, and Neiajhe Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters Winona C. Robinson, Eudora Ann Johnson, and Kyle B. Smith.
Opal’s Celebration of Life will be at 1:00 PM Monday at Ellers Mortuary Main Street Chapel, 725 South Main Street, Kokomo. Pastor William Gary will officiate. Cremation will follow. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Monday at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the Gilead House, 406 E. Sycamore Street, Kokomo, IN 46901. Envelopes will be available at the mortuary.
