KIRBY, STANLEY - age 85 of Knoxville passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011 at Mercy Hospice Center in Halls. He was a member of Bells Campground Baptist church in Powell, TN. and was a retired Deacon and a retired Mason from Beaver Ridge Lodge who had over fifty years of service. Stanley was born in Elkmont, TN. which is now a part of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. After the family’s evacuation from the mountains they took up residence in Bear Creek in Anderson County which is now the Oak Ridge defense site. After WWII commenced he joined the Marine Corp where he was stationed in the Philippines and fought in five major invasions. Stanley is preceded in death by parents, Clyde and Verdie Kirby, wife of fifty years Gladys Mounger Kirby; brothers Jack, and Omer; sisters Cecil, Mildred, and Reba. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Scott and Martha Kirby, daughter and son-in-law Mechella and Mike Benton of Boise, Idaho, grandchildren Dereck Cumpton of Meridian, Idaho, Tony, Laura, and Hannah Kirby of Knoxville, brother Bob Kirby of Bartow, Fl. Extended family members R.T. and Sharon Cox, and dozens of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to thank the staff of Mercy Hospice Center for their kindness and excellent care. A special thanks to the people who helped provide care for Stanley before his passing, nephew Randy Kirby, great niece Kellie Kirby and Shawn Boswell. Family will receive friends Tuesday 6-8 pm at Weavers with a chapel service to follow at 8 pm. Rev. Brian Trapp officiating. Family and friends will meet 9:45 am Wednesday at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens in Powell for a 10 am interment.
